Stay safe on our site

Privacy and Anonymity

Your privacy is important to us. We’ve designed this website to keep your privacy as safe as possible, but you may want to consider taking additional steps to protect yourself online. Find our policies and information below.

Hide your tracks

If you are concerned about someone knowing that you have been looking at our site, there are a few precautions and steps you can take to protect yourself.

While you are using this site

If you are concerned that someone else may come into the room while you are visiting this site, and you do not want them to see what you are looking at, the quickest way to hide the site is usually just to close the window.

It might be a good idea to remind yourself now of the keyboard command used to do this on your computer:

Windows: ‘ALT’ key and ‘F4’
Apple Macintosh: ‘Apple’ key and ‘W’

You could also open another browser window and leave it open at another website, placing it behind the window you are currently using (this site). This way, if you have to quickly close the main window, you will not be left looking at a blank screen.

Throughout our site, we’ve also included buttons or links labelled ‘Leave site’. Clicking on this will take you straight to Google.

Go private

Most modern browsers have a private browsing mode, which means no information – such as the sites you’ve visited, searches you’ve done or data you’ve put about yourself – is saved anywhere.

  • Internet Explorer:if you are using Internet Explorer 8.0 or later, click the Gear button or the Tools menu and select “InPrivate Browsing”.
  • Chrome: at the top right, click More  New Incognito Window. A new window appears. In the top corner, check for the Incognito icon.

After visiting our website

As you surf the internet, your internet browser (for example Internet Explorer) will save certain information such as which sites you have visited, files you’ve downloaded, and images you’ve viewed.

If you are worried that someone may have access to your computer or phone, you can cover your tracks by taking a few simple precautions outlined below.

Please note: By other means, it may still be possible for someone to work out which sites you have visited. If safety is a priority we recommend that it is safest to access this site from a safe place; such as a library, Internet cafe or a friend’s house.
